Keeping Relationships Strong while Socially Distancing

Match Support

More than ever before MATCH SUPPORT MATTERS - this means staying connected TO BOTH MENTORS and MENTEES!

Keeping involved and making sure that your mentors and mentees are managing through this crisis is very important.  Helping them to stay connected or manage their feelings of disconnection is also very important.

Check in with MENTORS

  • Get a pulse on how they are doing
  • Provide information
  • Encourage self care  - mentors must take care of themselves in order to be able to be fully present as mentors
  • Help them to create a “game plan” for how or if they can stay in touch with their mentee
  • Share resources with them on their role during this time of uncertainty - this is new to all of us
  • Be sure to listen and give them time to share
  • Offer an on-line training session - people may have time and have a need to connect and now more than ever there are topics that are important to the times we find ourselves.
  • For more information check out our resources on our website

Check in with MENTEES and CAREGIVERS

  • Get a pulse on how they are doing
  • Give them space to express their concerns, frustrations, share what they know and ask questions
  • Be clear about what is happening with your program
  • Help them create a “game plan” for how and/or if they can stay in touch with their mentor or how they may be able to say goodbye directly or indirectly to their mentor or thier group mentor partners
  • Share resources with them- offer suggestions if they are open to them and request them
  • If match activities are happening ask about how it feels, how it is going and if they have suggestions/requests moving forward
  • Give mentees voice, give choice create opportunities for them to have input
  • Provide support and care - remember to be there consistently and only promise what you can deliver

Resources for Connecting

There are several online platforms that help folks stay connected. Your program may opt to use one of the few below or another platform to facilitate remote connection. As you encourage mentors and mentees to stay connected, please be considerate of access needs and provide options that work for many.
